Spring Season’s Tea Club

In this season, we are introducing Wuyi Cliff Tea (or yan cha), a renowned style of oolong tea from the Wuyi Mountains, in Fujian Province, China. Da Hong Pao and Tie Luo Han are two famous varieties of Wuyi Cliff Tea. These teas are known for their distinctive mineral-rich flavor, often called “rock rhyme” (yan yun), which comes from tea plants growing among the region’s rocky cliffs and mineral-rich soil.

Da Hong Pao, meaning “Big Red Robe,” is one of the most sought-after teas in Wuyi Mountains. It is one of the most expensive oolong teas sold in history. However, the most expensive Da Hong Pao ever sold is from the original six mother bushes, and these are no longer available in the market. Today, there are two major types of Da Hong Pao in the market. The first type is produced from the cuttings of the original bushes and they are the same cultivar as the mother bushes. The other type, more commonly found in the market, is a carefully crafted blend of various Wuyi cliff teas designed to recreate the flavors and characteristics of the original Da Hong Pao. In this tea club box, we have included 2 different types of Da Hong Pao.

The Floral Da Hong Pao is made from the same cultivar lineage as the original mother bushes. It is medium-roasted, resulting in a smooth, elegant tea with a gentle floral aroma and lingering finish. Despite its lighter roasting, it still carries the signature yancha mineral finish.

The Da Hong Pao is a very well-balanced blended Da Hong Pao. It is very smooth, aromatic, and long-lasting on the palate. This tea shows how skillful blending can bring beautiful balance so that you may not even notice it is a blend.

Tie Luo Han, meaning “Iron Arhat,” is another traditional Wuyi Cliff Tea and is considered one of the earliest cultivars in the region. Its name references the Arhats, enlightened disciples in Buddhist tradition, symbolizing strength and spiritual depth. Compared to Da Hong Pao, Tie Luo Han typically has a stronger roasted aroma and a more robust, earthy flavor. It often presents notes of cocoa, roasted nuts, and dried fruit, along with a thick mouthfeel and pronounced mineral finish.

In this season, we are including the 2025 Tie Luo Han and the 2023 Tie Luo Han, allowing you to experience how the tea evolves over time and compare differences between harvests.

Although both Da Hong Pao and Tie Luo Han come from the same region and share similar processing methods, they offer distinct drinking experiences. Da Hong Pao is often appreciated for its elegance and balanced complexity, while Tie Luo Han is admired for its bold character and rich body. Together, these teas represent the rich tradition and unique ecology of Wuyi Cliff Tea.
